When the upgraded flatfish aquaculture facility in the Portuguese coastal town of Mira is completed, it will have an annual production capacity of more than 3,500 tonnes of turbot and sole. Behind the project stands Flatlantic, with Etermar Engenharia as the main contractor — and Pipelife as the supplier of an extensive piping system for water supply and circulation.

A Collaboration Built on Trust

For Álvaro Mendes, CEO of Etermar Engenharia, the project is yet another example of the value of a collaboration that has lasted for more than two decades.

— Pipelife has been a trusted partner for over twenty years. Their quality, reliability, and attention to detail have been essential to the success of many of our projects across the globe, says Mendes.

He highlights the strong relationship between the two companies and how it brings together expertise from different countries:

— This has been a remarkable partnership — HDPE pipes produced in Norway, installed by Portuguese teams, and operating worldwide. It’s a collaboration we intend to continue for many years to come.

Robust Piping Systems for Marine Environments

For the Mira facility, Pipelife is supplying 2,280 meters of HDPE marine pipelines with a diameter of OD 2000 SDR26, including all necessary fittings and components.

The delivery consists of four pipe sections, each measuring 570 meters, transported by tugboat to the site.

These pipes form part of a complete water intake and distribution system designed to ensure stable and efficient operations under challenging marine and weather conditions — a key factor for maintaining optimal fish health and long-term system performance.

Sustainable Growth in International Aquaculture

The Mira project marks another significant step in delivering sustainable infrastructure solutions to the global aquaculture industry — not only in Northern Europe, but increasingly across the continent.

— Through our close cooperation with Etermar Engenharia, we combine engineering expertise and durable products to support the future of sustainable seafood production, says Benjamin Aymard, Export Director at Pipelife.

The project in Mira demonstrates what can be achieved when experience meets innovation. Together, Etermar and Pipelife have created a solution that ensures operational reliability, efficiency, and environmental responsibility — contributing to sustainable growth in international aquaculture.
