A short presentation of the steps in a typical submarine pipe project
Pipelife Norge AS - the Stathelle plant
Pipelife’s Stathelle factory located at a sheltered fjord in southern Norway has due to its location a unique possibility to produce PE pipes in long lengths directly out into the sea.
Pipe preparation for towing
We have two alternatives of tow preparation, depending on the jointing solution selected.
1) With end plugs and towing clamps.
2) With flange connections, i.e. with stubends, backing rings and blind flanges assembled at the plant.
Delivery of long length PE pipes by tug boat
Pipelife takes care of the transport and insurance to the project destination.
Pipe Handover to the marine Contractor and Mooring of the Pipes
The delivery is jointly inspected by representatives of the Client, the Contractor and Pipelife, and after approval, handed over to the Contractor. Here the Pipelife scope of supply normally ends, except if site welding is needed.
Installation of PE pipes in Marine Applications
Assembly of Concrete Ballast Weights
The PE material has a density of 0,96 kg/dm
3, so a PE pipe floats even water filled. Therefore PE pipes are weighted with concrete weights before submerging.
Joining of the Pipe Sections
There are several types of connections used, of which the traditional flange connection is the most common. Others are mechanical couplings and GRP joints.
Pipe Submerging
The PE pipe is submerged by using the so called “float and sink “ method. The pipeline is filled with water in one end and air is let out in the other end. The pipeline goes down to the bottom in an S-shape.
Trench Excavation
The pipeline is, depending on the local circumstances, partly or totally placed in trench, in order to protect it from waves and currents as well as external damages (from fishing gears and anchors).
